Here are a few simple ideas of things you can do to support your young child’s language development. I suggest choosing a specific routine or time of day to practice implementing them, so you don’t get stuck in overwhelm thinking you have to do it all the time! 😉
You could pick snack time, play time, getting dressed, going to the store….
Stick with one a few times and find a rhythm that works for you. Then feel free to expand from there as long as it feels natrual to you.
Talk about what you are doing! (Sometimes called “Self Talk”)
- For example, “We’re going to the store next. I’m looking for some treats for the dog. I wonder what kind of treats we will find?”
- Or, when playing with playdough – “I’m smooshing mine flat. It feels soft and gooey. I wonder what I’ll make next? Maybe a fish? I’ll use the blue one.”
It’s super easy to ask kids lots of questions, but to learn language, children need to hear natural language! Talk to them what you are thinking or doing.
Read aloud to your child every day!
- Reading aloud to children is great for bonding time, literacy, language, social communication, learning about the world, and so much more!
Again, try picking a specific time or routine to try the self talk method. It may not feel natural at first, but give it a try!
