So you have a speech generating device. Or maybe you’re here wondering what that is and what on earth I mean by AAC. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is any communication method other than spoken word. We all use versions of this every day – gestures, facial expressions, texting and emailing are a few that come to mind.
There are also times when spoken speech is not easily accessible to a person for any number of reasons. Their speech may be unreliable or absent. Imagine having intact language processing abilities – you can understand everything you hear – but either nobody can understand your speech, or you just don’t reliably have the ability to speak.
This is where speech-generating devices come in (SGDs). These are iPad or tablet based devices or systems with robust vocabulary designed to provide an alternative means of communication (when speech is unreliable or absent) or an augmentative method (to supplement verbal speech and improve communication and intelligibility).
These devices can make a huge difference in the lives of those who learn and use them. The speaker is now able to access words that they otherwise could not use, granting them increased independence and the ability to communicate their wants, needs, thoughts, and questions. The devices can also look intimidating and take a lot of time to really use effectively.
For personalized, one-on-one guidance and coaching as you adjust to your AAC device, or if you want fresh ideas on how to use it in new ways, send me a message and we’ll figure out a plan that works for you.
I work with many different devices and vocabulary systems as well as all types of communication needs. I would love to hear from you!
